What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Laboratories developed Dolby Atmos, a surround sound technology for an immersive sound experience.

Although the Dolby Laboratories developed “Atmos” to expand on existing surround sound technologies. It adds height channels that allow sounds to be perceived as three-dimensional objects.

Dolby Atmos was first installed in Los Angeles’ El Capitan Theater for Brave’s premiere in June 2012. It saw limited availability of 25 installations in 2012 and 300 in 2013. Dolby cinema also uses “dolby atmos” as the audio component or dolby atmos receiver.

Dolby Atmos mixing, content and recording is available and possible on almost all of the latest electronic devices, including smartphones released after 2017.

Each theater’s Dolby atmos system renders audio object during playback based on known locations of dolby atmos enabled speakers in the movie theater. This ensures that every audio object is heard as it originates from the designated coordinates.

Contrary to conventional multichannel technology, which essentially converts all source audio tracks into a fixed amount of channels in post-production.

The re-recording mixer has been forced to make assumptions about the theater’s playback environment. Audio objects allow the mixer to be creative and bring more sounds to the screen while being confident with the final result.

Then they created the famous surround sound system improving the sound distribution with five or seven channels for an even richer experience.

Then Dolby came back with a complete game changer “Dolby Atmos.” In addition to the horizontal surround sound setups, dolby atmos by Dolby introduced overhead sound allowing sound objects to be precisely placed and moved within three-dimensional space.

Now you can have a spaceship flying overhead or a motorbike whizzing past you on the motorway. The sound of a gunshot can come from a precise location and follow the same trajectory as the bullet on screen.

Difference between Movie Theater & Home Theater Implementations of Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos home theaters are built on conventional 5.1 or 7.1 layouts. Dolby Atmos uses slightly different nomenclature: A 7.1.4 Dolby system is a traditional layout with four overhead speakers, or Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.

Dolby Atmos sound effects in home theater setups differs from movie theater due to the limited bandwidth and low processing power. But still the Dolby Atmos Soundbar will have more immersive sound experience than your normal TV speakers.

In your home, dolby atmos soundbar, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus add a spatially-coded substream, or it is included as metadata in Dolby MAT 2.0. This substream represents the original, object-based mix in an efficient way.

This channel is not matrix-encoded but a spatially encoded digital signal with panning metadata. Atmos can be used in home theaters to support 24.1.10 channels. It can also do 118 simultaneous dynamical objects with ten channels.

The spatially-encoded audio substream mixes the audio presentation to the speaker configuration.

To reduce bitrate, speakers and objects near each other are clustered together to create aggregate objects. These objects are then dynamically panned in a process Dolby calls spatial code.

To preserve the original objects’ sound, the sound may be spread across multiple aggregate objects.

Filmmakers can control the spatial audio and strength of clustering with the Dolby Atmos Production Suite tools. Dolby Digital Plus has also been updated with Atmos extensions.
