- What is Body Mass Index?
Body mass index or BMI is a standard value calculated by an individual’s body type, gender, age, and weight, representing the percentage of one’s body mass that is fat. BMI is determined by the ratio of weight to height and is usually expressed as a percentage, which is the higher the number, the higher the percentage of body fat.
- What is the Formula of BMI?
There are two types of formulas to calculate BMI in terms of measurement units:
In terms of Kilograms and meters (or centimeters)
Formula: Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]2
With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. If you are measuring your height in centimeters, then divide height in centimeters by 100 to obtain height in meters.
Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m)
Calculation: 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98
In terms of Pounds and Inches (or feet)
Formula: Weight (lb) / [Height (in)]2 x 703
You can calculate your BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703.
Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5’5″ (65″)
Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 = 24.96
